What is GNSS and GPS Testing?

In the EU/EEA/EFTA Nations, under the 2014/53/EU Radio Equipment Directive (RED), Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) User Equipment (GUE) must comply with the ETSI EN 303-413 Standard.  In particular, receiving systems that employ any or all of the following GNSS signals are subject to ETSI EN 303-413:

  • Global Positioning System (GPS),
  • Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS),
  • Galileo,
  • BeiDou (BDS), and,
  • any Space-based Augmentation System (SBAS).

ETSI EN 303 413 imposes strict Adjacent Channel Selectivity and Spurious Emissions requirements on GNSS User Equipment.

How do we perform it?

Performing the ETSI EN 303 413 Adjacent Channel Selectivity test, a highly specialized GNSS Satellite Simulator System is required to simulate the wanted emissions from the desired GNSS constellations of satellites, and an interference generator system is required to simulate the unwanted interfering signals.  In contrast, the Spurious Emissions ETSI EN 303 413 requirements are required to be tested in manner similar to any other receiver.

In the case where the Equipment under Test does not employ an antenna (or employs only a simple omnidirectional antenna with a known gain), it is possible to perform the testing by direct injection of the wanted and unwanted signals into the GNSS receiver.  However, if the Equipment under Test employs an active antenna and/or an adaptive null-steering antenna, it is necessary to perform the testing in a suitable equipped RF Anechoic Chamber.

Why choose us for GNSS and GPS testing?

BACL Sunnyvale is one of the few 3rd Party, Independent Test Laboratories in North America that is fully equipped and fully ISO/IEC 17025-accredited to perform all of the ETSI EN 303 413 tests.  We employ a Spirent Model GSS700 GNSS Satellite Simulation System with a Spirent GSS7725 Interference Generation System with RED Directive (EN 303 413) System Software, our 5m-3 RF Semi-Anechoic Chamber, a set of precision coaxial cables and a pair of Double-Ridge-Guide Horn Antennas.
